Rookie Training occurs at each of the 12 western rappel bases, with specific outlines varying by program. However, all share the common goals of challenging firefighters to overcome adversity and develop resilience while mastering the fundamentals of firefighting in remote, rugged terrain. At Salmon, the five-week training covers diverse topics, culminating in the National Rappel Academy, where firefighters are trained to become skilled rappellers.
Rookies are expected to arrive at training both physically fit and mentally prepared to learn. The program involves a demanding mix of aerobic and anaerobic cardio, as well as muscular endurance exercises, totaling 3-4 hours of physical training each day. This intense regimen places significant strain on the body, so proper preparation & nutrition is crucial. Visit the Fitness page for general tips and workouts to help prepare for rookie training.
Rookie training begins by gradually introducing workout movements, volume, and intensity, preparing recruits for upcoming physical demands such as runs, rucks, and calisthenics. The regimen quickly escalates to full intensity, with rookies engaging in 3-4 hours of daily workouts that include long runs, weighted hikes, and rigorous calisthenics.
The first three weeks of rookie training are also designed to offer valuable teaching moments that introduce recruits to the fundamentals of being a rappeller at Salmon, including the essential processes and procedures of the base and crew operations.
Week 4 centers on completing essential aviation qualification classes, including Helicopter Crewmember and Aviation Transport of Hazardous Materials. This week also serves as an introduction to the terminology, processes, and procedures of both Salmon Air Base and the National Rappel Academy.
Week 5 is the National Rappel Academy, where firefighters finally transition into becoming rappellers. This intensive week is designed to progressively develop rookies' skills, starting with the memorization of key terminology, advancing through ground mockups with decommissioned helicopters, progressing to 50-foot tower rappels, and culminating in live 300-foot helicopter rappels.
