Salmon Air Base hosts the National Rappel Academy, a specialized training program for wildland firefighters who have successfully completed a 4-5 week Rookie Training at one of 12 western U.S. rappel programs. The academy teaches advanced helicopter rappelling techniques for accessing remote wildfire areas.
During this intensive week-long course, recruits begin with classroom instruction, followed by ground training, helicopter mock-ups, and high tower simulators. They must master each rappel sequence on the tower before progressing to live helicopter rappels. The program operates on a performance-based model, requiring full proficiency at each stage; those who fail to meet safety and skill standards will be removed from training and ineligible to become Rappellers.
Rookies begin by mastering key processes crucial for safe rappel operations. They are required to memorize and accurately perform tasks including identifying and using rappeller equipment, conducting rappeller and spotter buddy checks, rigging and de-rigging a descender, and emergency procedures.
Once proficiency in the theoretical knowledge is demonstrated, training progresses to decommissioned helicopter hulls. Here, rookies start to integrate their skills, creating complete rappel mockups that simulate real scenarios without the height or risk. These mockups closely resemble live rappelling situations and provide ongoing practice along with valuable feedback for improvement.
With practical proficiency established, rookies advance to 50-foot training towers designed to closely mimic live rappel scenarios. This stage is their first chance to showcase their composure and expertise while being delivered via rope from an elevated position. They must complete a set number of rappels in diverse situations that reflect real-world conditions and emergency procedures.
At this stage of training, rookies have proven their complete proficiency and confidence in all rappel procedures. They now advance to live helicopter rappels from heights ranging between 100- 300 feet. To pass the training, they must successfully complete at least 8 rappels, including one emergency procedure. Upon successful completion, rookies are welcomed into the exclusive Rappel Community.
