Our Rookie Training Program is designed to progressively develop both physical fitness and job-related skills over several weeks, preparing candidates for the demanding nature of fighting fire on the Salmon-Challis National Forest.
Due to the physical challenges and cumulative fatigue involved in completing the Salmon Airbase rookie program, we require all candidates to arrive in peak physical condition.
To support your preparation, we’ve included contacts for experienced fitness coaches, and a structured training program below. These coaches have been successfully used by previous crew members and are tailored to meet the specific needs of wildland firefighters. Many have hands-on experience working with Hotshots, Smokejumpers and Rappellers, offering targeted training that has contributed to past success in rookie trainings.
For those who prefer to train independently, or are on a budget, we've also included access to free resources, books, and online programs that can be a great alternative to working with a personal trainer. Whether you choose to work with a coach or follow your own training plan, these resources will help you get ready for the physical demands of rookie training.
Below is a link to a 6 week training program created by one of our own rookie trainers. This program is designed to demonstrate the cumulative fatigue and tempo that is to be expected during the Salmon AirBase Rookie Evaluation portion of training. Based on physical fitness, some candidates may require more time to prepare and should not substitute the 6 week rookie program as their only means of training!
